maltese cross New SCOTT S.C.B.A.'s - March, 2007

The Lodi Fire Department has purchased and received Air-Pak® Fifty self-contained breathing apparatus from SCOTT Health and Safety.

Every member who participated in the fit testing has received a personal mask with a voice amplifier. 60 masks have been purchased in total, along with 60 packs and 120 air bottles.

The new breathing apparatus are made of lightweight materials which are a great improvement from the legacy steel bottles that have been in use in Lodi until 2007. The new bottles are 4500 psi which is a change from the steel bottle's 2216 psi, while maintaining the same 30 minutes of air-time.

Some benefits of the new S.C.B.A. include:

  • Redundant safeguards promote an added margin of safety
  • AV-2000 allows for interface with Scott’s full range of communication devices, including the voice amplifiers currently in use.
  • A lightweight, ergonomically designed harness system places bulk of weight on hips instead of the shoulders
  • Harness incorporates quick release take-up with parachute style hardware
  • Harness includes integrated PASS

Some benefits of the new Integrated Pak-Alert SE® PASS

  • Meets and exceeds the new NFPA PASS standard
    (NFPA 1981,1998 Edition)
  • Automatic activation
  • Louder pre-alarm volume
  • Battery check feature
  • Audible deactivation tone
  • Manual activation
  • Increased battery life
  • Two Alkaline 9V batteries provide 1000 hours of use
or choose two Ultralife® Lithium 9V batteries for 2000 hours of use

The SCBA’s are equipped with a new dual EBSS/airline (Buddy Breathing) connection.

This option provides the wearer the ability to connect to another user without having to disconnect the regulator supply hose. It also allows the wearer to be connected to a remote air source, which may be up to 300 feet away.

Simply put, one hose, two options for air.

The Lodi Fire Department also purchased a RIT-PAK from SCOTT.

The RIT-PAK is the first portable air supply designed to provide those tools needed by a RIT team to rescue a downed or trapped firefighter or victim. It has fast connections for providing air to downed/trapped firefighters, a specially designed Pyrotone® bag for durability, and are portable and lightweight.

Included with members' personal masks are new voice amplifiers powered by a single 9 volt battery.

These amplifiers are designed to promote stronger person-to-person communications and have up to 20 hours of continuous operation without a battery change.

Also, they do not add much weight to the mask, weighing only 7oz, and can be added to Lodi's old, existing masks as well, with a simple quarter turn locking mechanism.

This new equipment now makes Lodi compatable with the rest of the mutual aid towns and also the rest of Bergen County.
